You don’t have to sign up for a marathon to take part in Philadelphia’s running scene. A one-mile walk, a 5K or a morning cheering for a friend can be a more useful starting point than the longest race on the calendar.

This guide separates events still ahead in late 2026 from organizer-published 2027 dates. There’s also a watchlist for familiar races whose next dates I couldn’t verify. A familiar name is not a reason to assume last year’s registration rules still apply.

I ran track in high school and haven’t been running as much lately. I’m approaching this as a researched local guide for people finding their way in or returning, not as a coach or someone claiming to have raced all these events.

Choose the outing before choosing the medal

If you want to walk, look for an explicitly listed walking option and check the time limit. A race advertising “all paces” still has operating rules. If you’re returning after a long break, an event date is not a reason to rush preparation.

The Face to Face Turkey Trot lists a one-mile walk; the YMCA Gobble Wobble has a Wobble Walk option. For 2027, Valley Forge lists a separate two-mile walk. Those are clearer starting points for walking plans than assuming every road race will accommodate the same pace.

For places to spend time outside before committing to an event, use Walking and Running in Philly and the Suburbs: Find Your Next Route. No race entry required.

Philadelphia-area events still ahead in 2026

Dates and event descriptions checked October 19, 2026. A listed date does not guarantee entries remain available. Follow the official link for registration status, age rules, time limits and final instructions.

Rocky Run: November 14, 2026

The official Rocky Run registration page lists Saturday, November 14, with 5K and 10-mile races and the combined Italian Stallion Challenge.

The challenge combines the 5K and 10-mile events. Don’t mistake the 13.1-mile total for a separate, conventional half-marathon race. Choose the distance you’re prepared for and check the applicable cutoff and walking policy before registering. You don’t need to select the largest challenge to enjoy the occasion.

Philadelphia Marathon Weekend: November 20–22, 2026

The organizer’s schedule places the half marathon and Rothman Orthopaedics 8K on November 21 and the marathon on November 22, within the November 20–22 weekend.

At the time of checking, the marathon page said the marathon, half and 8K were sold out. Another page still suggested 8K availability, so don’t rely on an old “register” button. Confirm directly. Official charity partners may have entries, subject to their own availability and fundraising commitments; private bib resale is not an approved substitute.

If you’re just getting started, this can be a spectator weekend rather than a last-minute marathon goal. Use official spectator and transport instructions before deciding where to meet a runner.

Face to Face Turkey Trot: November 26, 2026

The event’s registration page lists a five-mile run and a one-mile walk in Philadelphia on Thanksgiving Day.

The separate walk makes this worth considering if you want to take part without planning a longer race. Read the event’s actual meeting-point and parking instructions. Packet pickup at Chestnut Hill College and the race start are not necessarily the same spot, and arriving at the wrong one can eat up your morning.

Greater Philadelphia YMCA Gobble Wobble: November 26, 2026

The YMCA’s event page lists Thanksgiving Day 5K and Wobble Walk options at several locations. These include Havertown, the Philadelphia Navy Yard, Royersford and Abington.

For readers around Glenside and Jenkintown, the Willow Grove Y event’s listed course is at Abington ELC, 1073 Old York Road, not an instruction to turn up at any YMCA branch. Select the location and event type you intend to attend, then read that course’s directions and pickup information.

Philadelphia Jingle Bell Run: December 12, 2026

The Arthritis Foundation’s Philadelphia event page lists December 12 at the Navy Yard’s Marine Parade Grounds and describes a holiday 5K welcoming different paces.

Some third-party calendars showed a different December date when researched. Use the organizer’s December 12 listing and recheck before leaving. If you plan to walk the course, confirm the relevant event option and time allowance instead of relying only on a general welcome message.

2027 dates published by the organizers

These dates were present on the official pages checked October 19, 2026. Dates can still change. Registration availability, course details and arrival instructions should be checked separately.

Love Run Philadelphia: March 21, 2027

The Love Run organizer lists a half marathon and a 7K for March 21. Its description welcomes walkers as well as runners for the 7K; read the current time limit before choosing it as a walking event.

Use the 2027 distance and instructions. Some older city announcements refer to a 7.6K, which is not the distance currently advertised for the 2027 edition. A shorter race can be a spring goal without committing to a half marathon.

Valley Forge Revolutionary Run: April 18, 2027

The official event landing page lists a five-mile run and two-mile walk on April 18. Registration is scheduled to open November 11, 2026, with a virtual run window of April 18–25, 2027.

Check which option you’re buying. A virtual entry is not admission to the in-person start. The landing page has moved to 2027 while some linked logistics still describe 2026, so wait for edition-specific packet pickup and parking instructions rather than copying last year’s arrangements.

Philadelphia Distance Run: September 19, 2027

The organizer’s race page lists both a half marathon and a 5K on September 19. It identifies the start near 22nd Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, with the finish at Eakins Oval.

The 5K gives readers a shorter option at the same event. Check the specific race rules and course time limit if you intend to walk or use a run/walk approach. “Half marathon and 5K” doesn’t mean one registration covers both.

A track-related detour: Penn Relays, April 22–24, 2027

The Penn Relays FAQ lists April 22–24 for 2027. This is a different kind of outing: watching track and field, not signing up for a community road race.

It belongs here as a spectator possibility, especially for people who miss the atmosphere of a track meet. Check the official schedule and ticket information for the sessions you want to see.

Major 2027 races still on the watchlist

I couldn’t verify organizer-published 2027 dates for the following races on the official pages checked. That’s a limit of this research, not a claim that no announcement exists anywhere.

  • Broad Street Run: the checked site still focused on the 2026 edition. Don’t assume a 2027 race day, lottery window or entry from last year’s schedule.
  • Philadelphia Marathon Weekend: references to 2027 deferrals do not establish the next race weekend’s dates.
  • Rocky Run: the checked registration page still listed November 14, 2026. Keep the 2027 date unconfirmed until there’s an edition-specific announcement.

If one of these is your goal, start with the organizer’s website and use its update options if you want announcements. Don’t book nonrefundable travel around a date inferred from a previous year.

Before you register or head out

Check the distance, course time limit and any rules about walkers, strollers, dogs or age. Then look at the total cost, cancellation or deferral terms, packet pickup and transport. Those details can make more difference to your day than a finisher shirt.

For a group outing without a race, the Friends of the Wissahickon activity calendar includes guided walks and hikes. Check the individual route and registration requirements rather than assuming every listing suits a beginner.

And if an event isn’t the right fit, keep it simple. Choose a place from Walking and Running in Philly and the Suburbs: Find Your Next Route and go for the walk you actually have time for.

Independent local calendar, not an official event site, coaching service or guarantee of entry. Dates and source pages checked October 19, 2026. The watchlist is separate from organizer-published dates. Recheck the organizer’s current instructions before registering or travelling.
